SOCIALINIAI MOKSLAI (Social Sciences), a research journal, has been issued since 1994, 4 to 6 volumes annually. Up to present, 46 volumes have been produced.

Aims & Scope

The concept of the journal emphasizes integration of the social sciences and cooperation among researchers. The competence obtained in the first stage of publication of this periodical enabled us to strive for co-operation. The series in four areas of the social sciences – economics, management, educational science and sociology were published. They included articles of Lithuanian and foreign researchers. The quality of all four annual issues of the periodical was supervised by the Editorial Board, which consisted of the researchers from four areas, whereas particular issues were compiled by the Editorial Board from the relevant area. However, even in the first stage of journal publication we could observe integration tendencies, both between the areas of the social sciences and between the researchers. The following features of the first stage are notable: integration in solving multidisciplinary problems was more common between closely related sciences – economics and management, education and sociology; a number of published works provoked other scholars to write follow up articles, some of them were published in co-authorship of Lithuanian and foreign scholars; articles in English were offered not only by foreign, but also by Lithuanian researchers.

However, life calls for a more integrated approach to social phenomena related to dramatic changes in society and organizations. The emerging knowledge and information society and globalization gives a new meaning to the necessity of continuous development of individuals, their groups and organizations. The inquiry on these problems often demands not only united methodological forces of more than two closely related areas of the social sciences but also application of a multidisciplinary approach. This in turn calls for both deep and broad competence of the researchers, as they must be able to penetrate into various aspects of the problems. On the other hand, a broad investigation of complex problems implies the danger of superficiality, leaving aside the depth of its certain components. Thus, at the present stage of the social sciences development, their integration is impossible without very close co-operation between researchers from different areas.

For these reasons our journal, on the way to the second stage of its development marked by co-operation and integration, emphasizes the following qualitative changes: researchers, gradually declining from focus on discrete areas of the social sciences, are invited to publish results of research on complex social problems which require interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach in a single issue of the journal.
