Mission

The mission of the Institute of Educational Studies is to influence the formation of qualities of the knowledge and information society and modernisation of education in Lithuania by developing the educational competence of the society, its members, and institutions.

In order to facilitate the accession of Lithuania into the EU and the competitiveness of the country on the global level, the Institute of Educational Studies seeks to develop the qualities of the knowledge and learning society by the means of creating new knowledge of educational science, accumulating progressive educational experience, disseminating them in the society, and thereby influencing:

  • modernization of the educational system of Lithuania;
  • development of learning regions;
  • development of schools and other non-profit as well as business organizations into learning organizations;
  • development of life-long learning competencies in all members of society (children, adults, and their teachers).


Aim

The aim of the Institute is to satisfy and develop the needs of the people for the professionalism of self-education and educational activities.

The activities of the Institute of Educational Studies have been intended for the following objectives:

  • Research targeted at the development of educational science in the world-wide and Lithuanian contexts and at modernisation of Lithuanian education at the crossroads of educational science, management, information science and communication;
  • Education of undergraduate and graduate students possessing the competence which meets modern international standards and training of teachers;
  • Development of educational competence in the Lithuanian society and among professionals by offering a variety of programmes and courses;
  • Contribution to other degree programs, offered by the University, by developing communication and educational skills of the future professionals;
  • Application of research results in carrying expertise, consulting, research and improvement of educational practice;
  • Collecting, translating, publishing, and disseminating information, analytical and methodical material on the issues of education, encouraging Lithuanian people and organisations to participate in the processes of modernisation of Lithuanian education by taking part in discussing educational reform, in implementing the steps of the reform, and by developing knowledge and skills of the professionals;
  • Serving as a model to other educational institutions in applying modern educational technologies and methods, especially distance teaching/learning.

Fields of Research:

Programs of Studies for Academic Degrees:

  • Doctoral studies in educational science (four years);
  • Educational science – Master’s studies (two years, 80 credits or 120 ECTS credits); fields of specialization:
  • Educational Management,
  • Higher Education,
  • Professional Education,
  • Social Education,
  • Educational Technologies;
  • Social education – Bachelor’s studies (four years, 160 credits or 240 ECTS credits);
  • Teacher training in pedagogics - Professional Training Program: full time (one year, 40 credits or 60 ECTS credits); distance (two years, 40 credits or 60 ECTS credits).


Laboratory of Educational Innovations

Laboratory aims at contributing to the creation of the information society in Lithuania through the development of educational innovations by accomplishing the functions of research, teaching, consulting, expertise and new knowledge dissemination.

Fields of Activity:

  • Analysis of progressive experience in foreign and local educational innovation implementation;
  • Creation, adaptation, implementation, and setting of educational innovations;
  • Accumulation of educational innovations bank;
  • Enhancing school and teachers’ possibilities in the use of educational innovations and their implementation in educational process.


Educational Competence Center

The Center aims at spreading knowledge in the society and, while developing educational innovations, intends to contribute to the creation of the information and knowledge society in Lithuania.

Fields of Activity:

  • Organizing seminars and qualification courses for teachers and heads of educational institutions;
  • Carrying out reasearch on the effectiveness of seminars and qualification courses;
  • Coordinating preparation of profession studies and re-qualification programs related to education;
  • Initiating and sustaining contacts with Lithuanian and foreign institutions in the field of teacher training and their qualification enhancement;
  • Creating and distributing modern teaching aids and educational technologies.


Gender Studies Center

The Center was established in 1993 according to the decision of the Senate of Kaunas University of Technology.

Gender Studies play an important role in postmodernist development of society as a generator of humanistic and fundamental values. The interdisciplinary nature of Gender Studies allows various scientific fields to connect and increase the awareness of the impact that culturally formed stereotypes have on social phenomena and their transformations.

Objectives:

  • Promote dialogue between genders inciting the critical thinking of students and members of the academic community that would enable them to evaluate education from a perspective of gender equality.
  • Become an important agent for the stimulation of equal gender opportunities, which should point out gender inequality and increase citizen awareness.
  • Exercise educational and academic activities promoting students’ understanding about gender inequality and enabling them to live and act in a heterogeneous society.
